“When I think grilled rib eye, I think Syrah.  Or Shiraz, the Southern Hemisphere name, which seems more common in South Africa, where Syrah/Shiraz production has expanded rapidly.  Of those tasted recently, I especially liked the sumptuous Stellenbosch Shiraz ’04 by Vergelegen.  There’s not much of it – the vineyard covers only a couple of acres – but the wine has sweet fruit, ripe tannins, and just a creamy touch of oak…”
