Moveable Feast at Vergelegen
04/08/09
“A party of 23 leading German restaurateurs, retailers and other wine customers recently concluded a week-long visit to South Africa with a delicious lunch and wine tasting at historic Vergelegen Estate in Somerset West. Guests picnicked at tables set up in a shady camphor forest, whose trees were grown from seeds taken from five 300-year-old camphor trees established in front of the manor house. The original old trees were planted by the first owner, Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel, and have been declared national monuments.”
Hawesko, the largest premium wine distributor in Europe, again hosted the annual trip for the company's top customers. Hawesko representatives stated the…“the Vergelegen visit is…the highlight of our trip.”
“Vergelegen began exporting Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Mill Race, a red blend, in 1994, expanding into top end offerings such as the Reserve and Flagship ranges of white and red wines. The estates winemaker Andre van Rensburg won the coveted international Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande trophy in 2001 and again in 2003 for the best blended red wine at the International Wine and Spirit competition in London.”
Vergelegen now successfully exports a range of wines to 25 countries including, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland, Latvia the United Arab Emirates, the United States of America, Germany and the Netherlands.
